Pre-Wedding Bridal Parties 101

Find out how similar or different the bridal shower, bachelorette party, and despedida de soltera are from each other.

Despedida de Soltera

Who hosts this get-together? The family of the bride
Who’s in the guest list? The groom, the bride, the groom and bride’s immediate families, and their closest friends

Where is it held? Typically held in a restaurant, a private function room, or at the home of the bride’s family

What can guests expect? Symbolizing the consent of the bride-to-be’s family to the upcoming nuptials as well as the woman’s departure from singledom, the despedida de soltera consists of a send-off dinner that gives the two families a chance to get to know each other in a more relaxed setting. The formality of the get-together can be tweaked depending on the location of the party as well as the food served.

How crazy can it get? This is the tamest bash of the bunch. There are no games or activities, but parents of the groom and the bride can give toasts and words of wisdom to the soon-to-be newlyweds.

Bridal Shower

Who hosts this get-together? The Maid of Honor with the bridal entourage
Who’s in the guest list? The Maid of Honor, bridal entourage, bride’s closest friends, bride’s mother, and groom’s mother

Where is it held? At a private function room, a hotel room, or at the Maid of Honor’s house

What can guests expect? A fun afternoon or evening with food served, games prepared by the hostess, and gifts that will help the newlyweds set up their new home.

How crazy can it get? This celebration is not so rowdy but still equally fun.

Bachelorette Party

Who hosts this get-together? The Maid of Honor and the bride’s closest friends
Who’s in the guest list? The bride’s inner circle

Where is it held? In a club, a slew of bars, or even at an out-of-town destination such as the beach or a spa getaway

What can guests expect? The bachelorette party usually involves bar-hopping, consuming alcohol, accomplishing dares, and letting the bride have the time of her life before she ties the knot! Naughty or funny gifts can be given to the celebrant for the wedding night or honeymoon.

How crazy can it get? One word: Very. It all depends on how willing your bride-to-be is to partake in all the festivities, so make sure to clear things up with her before planning the night or weekend.
